Ways of Seeing. Collection of Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź

Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź
From October 17, 2025

A new permanent exhibition titled Ways of Seeing has opened at ms², the Museum of Art in Łódź. The display takes visitors on a journey through the history of art and the remarkable story of the museum itself – an institution founded by artists that, since the 1930s, has been a center of the European avant-garde, a site of global artistic exchange, and a cradle of artistic experimentation. The dela.art collection is proud to be a partner of this new exhibition.
The exhibition centers on the phenomenon of seeing – understood both as a biological function and as a cultural or political act. Divided into thirteen thematic chapters, it presents art as a tool for cognition and a means of questioning how and why we look. The issues explored include the relationship between sight and memory, the social contexts of looking, perception as a form of knowledge and a means of resistance, as well as questions of identity, corporeality, and the sensory experience of reality.

The exhibition’s title refers to the British television series created by art historian John Berger, which demonstrated how crucial social context is for understanding any work of art. A similar conviction was expressed by Władysław Strzemiński, an artist and one of the founders of the Museum of Art in Łódź, in his iconic book Theory of Vision. However, the presentation of the collection does not aim to illustrate these theoretical achievements. Instead, it reveals the multiplicity of artistic ways of representing, feeling, and understanding reality.

The exhibition features works by both classic avant-garde artists and contemporary creators who continue to engage in dialogue with its legacy.
