Down Deep: Living Seas,
Living Bodies

State Gallery of Art, Sopot

Down Deep: Living Seas, Living Bodies is an international group exhibition presented at the State Gallery of Art in Sopot. Its unique location on the Baltic coast provides a natural context for exploring the relationship between humans and the ocean – physical, emotional, and spiritual. Water serves as a shared point of reference, connecting artistic practices rooted in diverse cultures and experiences.

The exhibition poses the question: What does it mean to be an ocean, and how can we restore the connection between the human body and the vast body of water that covers most of the Earth? In this context, the exhibition also draws on scientific reflections regarding the aquatic origins of life, which, according to recent hypotheses, may be linked to deep-sea hydrothermal vent environments.

On the mezzanine level of the second floor of Down Deep: Living Seas, Living Bodies, the exposition Woman’s View of the Sea is presented, featuring artworks inspired by scientific research conducted by Polish marine researchers. Conceived as a dialogue between artists and scientists, the project aims to present the marine world from a unique female perspective, combining sensitivity, knowledge, and artistic vision in narratives about oceans and seas. The exhibition is the result of a competition organized by the Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Sopot.
