Saligia

Julia Medyńska

18.05 – 31.05.2024
Hala Koszyki, Warsaw

Saligia is an acronym formed from the initial letters of the seven deadly sins. In the series of works “The Seven Deadly Sins” presented at the exhibition, Julia Medyńska creates a dark atmosphere that prompts reflection on the human condition.

“We may not fully understand the eponymous seven of Saligia, but perhaps it’s better if they remain a little enigmatic and understated, creating the opportunity for many diverse answers. After all, the titles remain, and they will prompt viewers to find the ethical and eschatological content of these canvasses”. Bogusław Deptuła

“Subverting the topics, mixing horror with humour, winking at the audience means that the paintings have multiple layers and can be interpreted in many ways. Where the terrified viewer covers their eyes, the artist says, no, wait, this is where you laugh. The seemingly most innocent scene, on the other hand, can hide the greatest horror”. Małgorzata Czyńska, Wojciech Tuleya.

A catalog containing critical texts by Bogusław Deptuła, Małgorzata Czyńska, and Wojciech Tuleya, comments from the artist herself, and literary studies by Wojciech Chmielarz was published on the occasion of the exhibition.
