Tegene Kunbi (b. 1980) is an Ethiopian artist who lives and works between Addis Ababa and Berlin. He studied Painting and Art Education at Addis Ababa University and later completed an MFA at the Universität der Künste Berlin through a DAAD scholarship.

He creates abstract paintings characterized by intense color and richly textured surfaces. In his work, he combines expressive painterly gestures with textiles that reference Ethiopian traditions and rituals. His practice focuses on memory, identity, spirituality, and the relationship between color, materiality, and collective experience.

He represented Ethiopia at the 61st Venice Biennale. He gained international recognition after receiving the Grand Prix Léopold Sédar Senghor at the Dak’Art Biennale in 2022. His works have been exhibited at Primo Marella Gallery in Milan, Galerie Dutko in Paris, Gallery 1957 in Accra, Bode and Galerie Barbara Thumm in Berlin, Standing Pine in Tokyo, and Circle Art Gallery in Nairobi.
